About
the Author
An
award-winning reporter for two decades, Christopher
Scanlan leads the reporting and writing program at The Poynter
Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he teaches professional
and student journalists. He is the editor of Best Newspaper
Writing and How I Wrote the Story. Scanlan began his career
reporting for small daily newspapers in his native Connecticut
and has a masters degree from Columbia University
Graduate School of Journalism. He was a staff writer for
The Providence Journal, where he helped launch the papers
writing improvement program; feature writer for the St.
Petersburg Times; and national correspondent for Knight
Ridder Newspapers in Washington, D.C. Winner of 16 awards
for reporting and writing, including a Robert F. Kennedy
award for international journalism, Scanlan publishes articles,
essays, and short fiction in numerous magazines, textbooks,
and online sites. He is an adjunct instructor at the University
of South Florida and a frequent writing coach in newsrooms
around the country.
