As a journalist
and artist, stresses that those roles should be inseparable in
many newsroom positions. Involved in pioneering graphic research
work (Eyes on the News, a Poynter study of how newspaper
readers process graphic elements, and Color, Contrast, and
Dimension in News Design, about the impact of color on the
printed page). Uses life-drawing studio sessions; lectures on
the integration of writing, editing, and design (WED) in the newsroom;
draws rave review from editors and art directors alike.
