Pushes visual journalists to approach their work with an editor's critical thinking skills and an artist's sense of wonder. Preaches the joys of collaboration and encourages participants to build clout by being change agents, supportive colleagues, and good newsroom citizens. Specialties include typography, journalistic graphic design, information graphics, and leadership.

Award-winning first design director, The Charlotte Observer; AME/graphics and photo, Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat and Chronicle; art director, Gannett Suburban Newspapers; design editor, The Arkansas Gazette; feature page designer, copy editor, and assistant features editor, The Anchorage (Alaska) Times. More than 30 Society for News Design awards, including multiple medals. Awards from Print magazine, Associated Press, Knight Ridder, and other press organizations. B.A., English, Phi Beta Kappa, St. Olaf College; studies in literature and philosophy, Oxford University, Oxford, England; M.A. in visual communication, University of Minnesota.
