Challenges managers to embrace
change in the newsroom by developing people and holding to excellence
in journalism. Teaches the rewards of resilience and sound ethical
decision-making. Encourages newsroom leaders to hire promotable
people and to coach them to their optimum performance level. Urges
journalists to see diversity as good journalism and desirable
business.
Taught broadcast news for
nearly 10 years at the Missouri School of Journalism before joining
the leadership faculty at Poynter; former news reporter/anchor
for WTTV-TV, Indianapolis; founding director of the Audio Video
Communication Center and lecturer at Institut Teknologi MARA/Indiana
University, Shah Alam, Malaysia; consultant to the award-winning
PBS production Eyes on the Prize II; consulting clients include
radio and television stations in the United States, Eastern Europe,
and Southeast Asia; research focuses on women and minorities in
management and the images and impact of African Americans in media.
