Audio & Video

Use audio to allow subjects to tell their story. CNN has the challenge of expanding short television packages. The television story is based on a two minute video, but it may not be needed if the story can be conveyed in other ways, Chuck Westbrook says. Example: CNN captured the voices of teens who attend a unique school for "at-risk" students.

Intranet

The CNN Intranet includes an internal newsletter; a people finder with employees names, job titles, departments, and vacation schedules.

They also take the style book a step further with an interactive tool box that gives examples of time lines, maps, quizzes, and images that have been used in the past. When someone creates a new way of doing something, they upload an example and links to the source code.

Pop-up Boxes

JavaScript pop-up boxes are created when the user clicks on a link. The plus is that the reader does not have to leave the main story to get more information on other parts of the story.

Set Asides

Set Asides, also called Server Side Includes (SSI), allow you to designate repeated tasks such as links or navigational information. "I suggest that you figure out what you're doing that you don’t want to do over, and over and do server set asides," Westbrook says.
