Links to Critical Thinking

Critical thinking skills are essential to storytelling because they help the writer create the voice that takes journalism to another level. Here are links to educational sites that focus more clearly on critical thinking and how it might apply to sharpening journalism skills.

A Call for Reason
This essay explores how critical thinking applies to journalism. The web page also includes a profile of a critical thinker and bibliography by Bill Dorman, a journalism and government teacher at Sacramento State University.

Critical Thinking Resources in English and Journalism
As more teachers focus on the importance of critical thinking skills, sites such as this one, produced by Dave Sharp of Maple Woods Community College, provide links to valuable resources.

Program@Nevada
The faculty of the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada-Reno spent a year refocusing its curriculum to integrate critical thinking skills into all its courses. The school's mission is to "to teach students to think critically and to apply that thinking to the collection, organization, and communication of information through the public media" Browse the course syllabi to see how they do it.
